Before planning

Measure stock and cuts

  • Enter the full stock length and each finished part length.
  • End trim is reserved at both ends of every stock length.
  • Kerf is reserved between consecutive pieces, not after the final piece.
  • Blank stock quantity means unlimited stock within the planner’s safety limit.

Worked example

Rails and stiles

The default project plans four 720 mm rails and four 510 mm stiles from 2,400 mm stock, with a 3 mm kerf and 10 mm trim at each end. The displayed plan and losses come directly from the production engine.

Method and limitations

How the plan is selected

The engine sorts pieces deterministically, compares first-fit and best-fit decreasing plans, and selects the plan using the fewest stock lengths and then the least reusable offcut.

The result is an efficient heuristic rather than proven global optimization. Defects, knots, grain matching, angled cuts, clamping space, and workshop cut order are outside the model.

Does this guarantee the fewest boards?

No. The tool compares practical repeatable strategies; another arrangement can occasionally use less stock.

How is kerf counted?

One kerf is reserved between adjacent pieces on a stock length.

Can I limit available stock?

Yes. Enter a whole quantity, or leave it blank for the documented unlimited mode.

Can it plan angled cuts?

No. All entries are treated as straight finished lengths.
