Estimating limits

Assumptions

  • The room and every flooring piece are rectangular.
  • The estimate is area-based and does not optimize plank cuts or reusable offcuts.
  • Waste is user-defined and applied once before purchase rounding.
  • Boxes round upward; layout, breakage, defects, batch matching, obstacles, and installer practice can require more material.
  • Underlay, adhesive, trims, and subfloor work are excluded.

Confirm package contents and product guidance before buying. See the shared calculation methodology.

Transparent method

Formula and method

Room area = length × width

Base pieces = room area ÷ piece area

Adjusted pieces = base pieces × (1 + waste ÷ 100)

Boxes = ceiling(ceiling(adjusted pieces) ÷ pieces per box)

All dimensions convert to metres and all areas to square metres before division.

Verified example

4 m × 3 m room

A 12 m² room with 120 cm × 20 cm pieces requires 50.00 exact pieces. With 10% waste, that becomes 55.00, or 55 whole pieces and 7 boxes of eight.

Common questions

Flooring calculator FAQ

How much flooring waste should be added?

Choose an allowance appropriate to cutting, layout, defects, and project uncertainty; 10% is only the editable default.

Why are boxes rounded up?

Partial boxes generally cannot be purchased, so the package estimate rounds upward.

Does it optimize plank cuts?

No. It divides areas and does not plan cuts or reusable offcuts.

Can it calculate multiple rooms?

No. This version covers one rectangular room.

Does it include underlay?

No. It estimates flooring pieces and boxes only.
