- Tiles are one size and grout joints are uniform.
- Edge cuts and reusable offcuts are not optimized.
- Pattern, breakage, colour variation, batch matching, obstacles, room shape, and installer practice can change requirements.
- Waste is user-defined and boxes are rounded up to whole packages.

Columns = ceiling((surface length + joint) ÷ (tile length + joint))
Rows = ceiling((surface width + joint) ÷ (tile width + joint))
Base tiles = rows × columns
Whole tiles = ceiling(base tiles × (1 + waste ÷ 100))
Boxes = ceiling(whole tiles ÷ tiles per box)
Adding one joint to both sides of each directional equation counts repeated tile-and-joint modules while avoiding a joint after the final tile. Zero-width joints remain valid.
Verified example
3 m × 2 m surface with 30 cm tiles
With 0.3 cm joints, the engine counts 7 rows × 10 columns, or 70 base tiles. At 10% waste it estimates 77.00 tiles, rounded to 77 whole tiles and 8 boxes of 10.
Common questions
Tile calculator FAQ
Why can this differ from area-only division?
Rows and columns round independently, so partial edge rows can require more tiles than an area ratio suggests.
How much waste should be added?
Choose an allowance appropriate to the layout, cutting, and breakage uncertainty; 10% is only the editable default.
Why are boxes rounded up?
Partial boxes usually cannot be purchased, so the package estimate rounds upward.
Does it reuse cut tiles?
No. The estimate does not optimize cuts or reusable offcuts.
Can it calculate diagonal or patterned layouts?
No. It models a straight rectangular grid only.
